Shared Governance: Working Together for a stronger CCC

Faculty Senate and Staff Council give CCC employees a formal voice in decisions that affect the college community.

Through shared governance, faculty and staff contribute their perspectives, communicate concerns and recommendations, and participate in college-wide planning and decision-making. This helps CCC draw on the knowledge and experience of the people who teach, support and work directly with students.

For our students and community, that means that:

  • Academic programs reflect input from the instructors who teach them

  • Campus services are informed by the staff who deliver them

  • Changes to college policy go through a process that includes multiple perspectives

  • The college stays accountable to the people it serves

Faculty Senate

The CCC Faculty Senate represents the faculty voice in college decision-making, particularly on matters related to academics, teaching and learning, and the faculty experience. As part of CCC’s shared governance process, the Senate advocates for academic leadership and fairness, brings faculty perspectives and recommendations to college-wide discussions and committees, and works to strengthen transparency and communication. Its work supports quality academics, student success, and an informed, collaborative college community.

Submit and Agenda Item

Do you have an idea or concern about academics at CCC? Faculty Senate accepts agenda item requests from students and employees. Requests should address a broader academic or professional issue rather than an individual concern. Please note that Faculty Senate addresses systemic academic issues and is not able to act on behalf of individual students. For personal concerns, visit our Report a Concern page.

Agenda item requests must be submitted at least two weeks before a scheduled Senate meeting.

Staff Council

Staff Council represents CCC staff whose primary classification is not faculty or administration at the Director level or above.

The Council promotes communication among staff, provides staff representation in college-wide groups and committees, and gives employees a way to contribute to decisions that affect staff and the college. Through that work, Staff Council helps bring staff perspectives into CCC’s shared-governance process.

Why is Shared Governance Important?

Shared governance gives employees across CCC opportunities to participate in the decisions that shape the college.

Faculty Senate brings faculty perspectives to academic and institutional discussions, while Staff Council represents the employees who support CCC’s programs, services and operations. Together with other college councils and leadership, these groups help strengthen communication, collaboration and informed decision-making across the college.
